Dear La Côte family and friends,

Aah…the intricacies of Anglican nomenclature!

At the celebratory afternoon tea in the Gingins parish rooms last Sunday, I was asked by a group of interested and curious people, “What are you?” They were not asking about my obvious ethnicity but were referring to my ordination service the week before at the Pro-Cathedral in Brussels, and to the service just that afternoon at Gingins where La Côte Church welcomed me to serve as curate.

Well, after my training for priesthood, I was ordained by Bishop Robert Innes.  For the first year of my ministry, I am a deacon, from the ancient Greek word for a serving one. I am not yet permitted to do certain things such as preside at Holy Communion, but in a year’s time, I will be ordained as a priest and can take up the full range of clergy duties.

During the next four years, I will serve as an assistant curate – an apprentice vicar – under the supervision of an experienced vicar, namely Carolyn.😀 However, in the Diocese in Europe, vicars are referred to as chaplains and their ministry work covers regional areas called chaplaincies, rather than parishes, which have fixed boundaries. Using more Anglican language, Carolyn is my training incumbent, and I am her assistant curate but am called curate for short (and like the Apostle Paul, I am quite short!).

Curates, vicars, chaplains – these are basically job titles. But ordination is a life-changing event, a bit like becoming a husband or a wife or a parent. And once the change has happened, there is work to be done, to ‘take care of the souls living in the parish’. Stephen Cottrell, the Archbishop York, described the ministry of those in priesthood as servants, shepherds, messengers, sentinels and stewards.

Dear La Côte Church community, thank you so much for your support and encouragement, love and care, during my years of training. And thank you for the many kind messages sent to me for my ordination and last Sunday’s service to welcome me as curate. The hugs, kisses, handshakes, smiles and congratulatory words touched me very deeply.

As I compose this reflection, I can see the beautiful olive tree that was presented to me at the service. Somebody remarked to my husband Chris that the olive tree is an appropriate symbol of fruitfulness in ministry. This is my prayer and aspiration – fruitfully to serve God and his people at La Côte Anglican Church.
