Dear La Côte family and friends,

In this intense period of election fever the Church of England booklet, “Pray your part” has been humbling and challenging:

The reflection for Day 2, refers to Psalm 15.1-2

“O Lord, who may abide in your tent? Who may dwell on your holy hill? Those who walk blamelessly and do what is right, and speak the truth from their heart.”

The author comments: “It is right that citizens should expect integrity, honesty and humility of those who wield power over the lives of others.

Perhaps the key word there is ‘humility'.

Holding others to account demands that we all face our own failure to live as we might wish. Those who “abide in the Lord’s tent” (Psalm 15.1) share space with others who know their own weakness – those who know their need of God’s grace and the love of their neighbour.

As we rightly expect integrity in those engaged in public life, let’s pray, too, that we may, in humility, hold ourselves to the same high standards.” (Day 2, Pray your part).

Likewise, we can pray for servant leaders who, instead of the divisive discourse: “they are wrong, we are right” seek constructive conversations with one another across the political divides. May they discover courageous common ground that strives for the common good, especially the most vulnerable.

Guide the leaders of our nations amid election fever. We pause to name them before you….

Inspire them to work for the common good, to be servant leaders who seek after the goals of your Kingdom.

Strengthen our hearts with humility and with a vision of your Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven, and of the part you call us to pray and play in it.

Hear us, good Lord.

Carolyn Cooke
